Entries open for 2010 Giro del Capo

(Cape Town, 11 Januray 2010)

Speculation within the cycling fraternity in South Africa is rife as to which local and international teams will be invited to participate in the 2010 Pick n Pay Giro del Capo presented by Cape Argus. The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust announced in early December that it had managed to save the prestigious Giro del Capo at the last minute, after the event had been cast a lifeline by Pick n Pay. The 2010 Giro del Capo will now be run as a four-day national stage race, from 9-12 March. Seventeen local and three international teams are expected to participate. "We've received enquiries from interested German and Ukrainian teams. I'm confident that, as per usual, the Giro will boast with a stellar team line-up," commented David Bellairs, Co-Director of the Cycle Tour Trust. The 2010 Giro del Capo is open to teams of six riders, all of whom must hold valid elite u/23 racing licences. Teams can be entered by clubs, provinces or sponsors which are duly registered with Cycling South Africa, and need to qualify on merit. The team entry fee is R5,000. Teams can initially register nine riders, and specify which six riders will be participating closer to the event. Applications close on 27 January. The four stage races are as follows: Tuesday 9 March: Stage 1 - Wellington: 106km route Wednesday 10 March: Stage 2 - Durbanville: 143km Thursday 11 March: Stage 3 - Paarl: 171km route Friday 12 March: Stage 4 - Signall Hill: 5.5km individual time trial For more information, visit www.girodelcapo.co.za or contact Wendy Cole on secretary@girodelcapo.co.za.
